SE MODEL YEAR CHANGES: | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
1989 1/2MY Esprit Turbo SE The SE Esprit was introduced in May of 1989. Many changes from the previous Turbo Esprit were done to the car. Specific changes: Esprit Turbo 'S.E.' (Chargecooler): 82/F – 5000 May '89 * Air/water charge air cooled turbo engine with Lotus/Delco
fuel
injection Commonisation of 'Eagle Chassis': May '89 * Chargecooler type chassis and suspension, with 16" rear wheels and Goodyear Eagle tires.
90MY to 91MY Esprit Turbo SE These were the safety years for the Esprit. The major introductions during this time were the inclusion of standard anti-lock brakes and driver side air bag. Also during this time, the driver-side a/c vents were moved to the instrument binnacle (dash). The front suspension geometry waws revised to eliminate anti-dive carachteristics reducing pitching movement and improving the ride. The caster angle was changed from 2.5 to 1 degree to improve the steering effort. The bump travel waws increased with revised bump-steer chatachteristics for better straight line stability. Stiffer front springs were added. An ice-warning light which came on once the ambient temperature dropped below five degrees Centigrade waws also added. Specific changes: '91 Model Year Esprit, Esprit 'S' & Esprit 'S.F.': M 0001
October '90 * ABS brakes.
92MY Esprit Turbo SE There were no Esprits brought into the USA for the 1992 model year. The rest of the world received the "highwing" edition featuring a normal SE-style wing, but on much taller struts and with additional support struts that attached to the top of the tailgate. The "glassback" design was replaced with an open tailgate with 2 oval vents (for engine cooling) this year. The rear tailgate window was also made larger and more angled for less reflection. The interior was upgraded with new wider (2.1 inches) seats, a lower (1.1 inch) and narrower (1 inch) center tunnel, and a rear bulkhead redisigned for 1.4 more inches of cockpit length. The pedals when not depressed were moved 2 inches further forward, the clutch pedal got an "assister" for snappier action and the throttle action was lightened by rerouting cables. A small cubby box was added under the redesigned smaller heater control panel, the heater/ac controls were made easier to adjust and the fuel flap switch was repositioned for easier access. The car also got an upgraded in-car entertainment system. The exterior recieved a black front rubber spoiler lip, Lotus logo wheel center caps and a "chargecooler" badge under the rear license plate. The tires received new tread compound. The front axle lift co-efficient was also reduced from 0.17 to 0.02 reducing understeer. Specific changes: '92 Model Year Esprit & Esprit 'S.E.' N 0001 October
'91 * Increased interior space with revised pedal box and interior
trim, wider door opening (9 inches).
93MY Esprit Turbo SE The 93MY SE was only imported into the US and limited to 62 cars. It has the majority of the 92MY changes but also included the following changes: * A larger SE style rear wing, similar to the standard SE
wing,
but taller and at more of an angle.
