SE MODEL YEAR CHANGES:

1989 1/2MY Esprit Turbo SE

The SE Esprit was introduced in May of 1989. Many changes from the previous Turbo Esprit were done to the car.

Specific changes:

Esprit Turbo 'S.E.' (Chargecooler): 82/F – 5000 May '89
Same as '89 M.Y. cars except:

* Air/water charge air cooled turbo engine with Lotus/Delco fuel injection
* Increased Horsepower from 228hp to 280bhp.
* Boost increased to 12.4psi
* 16" rear wheels and Goodyear Eagle tires (Front 215/50ZR15 on 7inch wheels. Rear 245/50ZR16 on 8.5inch wheels.)
* Revised suspension geometry
* Restyled front spoiler (more "square-ish" and has 5 openings; the outermost openings are for the twin oil coolers, which non-SE's do not have. Also an air duct on each side of the air dam, ahead of the front wheels for oil cooler exhausts.)
* Restyled side sill ducts (parallel to body, not scalloped or "pinched-in" at mid-door)
* Strut mounted rear spoiler. (Most non-SE's do not have rear wings.)
* All leather interior. Replaced "overlapping leather strip" look with more refined stitching on center console, seats and doors.

Commonisation of 'Eagle Chassis': May '89
N.A. RHD 85 D 3582
Turbo RHD 82 D 3587
N.A. & Turbo LHD 85/82 D 1152
USA spec. RHD 82/F - 2728
USA spec. LHD 82/F - 2749
Same as '89 M.Y. cars except:

* Chargecooler type chassis and suspension, with 16" rear wheels and Goodyear Eagle tires.

90MY to 91MY Esprit Turbo SE

These were the safety years for the Esprit. The major introductions during this time were the inclusion of standard anti-lock brakes and driver side air bag. Also during this time, the driver-side a/c vents were moved to the instrument binnacle (dash). The front suspension geometry waws revised to eliminate anti-dive carachteristics reducing pitching movement and improving the ride. The caster angle was changed from 2.5 to 1 degree to improve the steering effort. The bump travel waws increased with revised bump-steer chatachteristics for better straight line stability. Stiffer front springs were added. An ice-warning light which came on once the ambient temperature dropped below five degrees Centigrade waws also added.

Specific changes:

'91 Model Year Esprit, Esprit 'S' & Esprit 'S.F.': M 0001 October '90
U.K. only - Carburetor Turbo (Esprit)
U.K. only - M.P.F.I. Turbo (Esprit 'S')
Export - M.P.F.I. Turbo (Esprit)
Worldwide - Chargecooled M.P.F.I. Turbo (Esprit S.E./Esprit)
SE' designation dropped for chargecooler cars in non-USA LHD markets to avoid trademark infringement.
(N.A. model discontinued)
Same as 'Eagle Chassis' or Esprit Turbo S.E. except:

* ABS brakes.
* Carburetor model has open back tailgate, 4-slot rear valance (as previous N.A.), and 'no fogs' front spoiler.

92MY Esprit Turbo SE

There were no Esprits brought into the USA for the 1992 model year. The rest of the world received the "highwing" edition featuring a normal SE-style wing, but on much taller struts and with additional support struts that attached to the top of the tailgate. The "glassback" design was replaced with an open tailgate with 2 oval vents (for engine cooling) this year. The rear tailgate window was also made larger and more angled for less reflection. The interior was upgraded with new wider (2.1 inches) seats, a lower (1.1 inch) and narrower (1 inch) center tunnel, and a rear bulkhead redisigned for 1.4 more inches of cockpit length.The pedals when not depressed were moved 2 inches further forward, the clutch pedal got an "assister" for snappier action and the throttle action was lightened by rerouting cables. A small cubby box was added under the redesigned smaller heater control panel, the heater/ac controls were made easier to adjust and the fuel flap switch was repositioned for easier access. The car also got an upgraded in-car entertainment system. The exterior recieved a black front rubber spoiler lip, Lotus logo wheel center caps and a "chargecooler" badge under the rear license plate. The tires received new tread compound. The front axle lift co-efficient was also reduced from 0.17 to 0.02 reducing understeer.

Specific changes:

'92 Model Year Esprit & Esprit 'S.E.' N 0001 October '91
U.K. only - Carburettor Turbo (Esprit)
Worldwide - Chargecooled M.P.F.I. Turbo (Esprit S.E./Esprit) 'SE' designation dropped for chargecooler cars in non-USA LHD markets to avoid trademark infringement.
Same as '91 M.Y. cars except:

* Increased interior space with revised pedal box and interior trim, wider door opening (9 inches).
* C/cooler models; open back tailgate with oval vents, high mounted spoiler, front spoiler bib.
* Carb. model; 'S.E.' type sills.

93MY Esprit Turbo SE

The 93MY SE was only imported into the US and limited to 62 cars. It has the majority of the 92MY changes but also included the following changes:

* A larger SE style rear wing, similar to the standard SE wing, but taller and at more of an angle.
* Except for commemorative editions, the 1993MY was the first USA Stevens' model without the glassback design.
* Revolution alloy 5-spoke wheels in painted black with a polished silver lip. These are one-piece clones/imitations of the 16" three-piece wheels found on the X180R race variant and street version limited edition.
* A front rubber lip spoiler to protect the underside of the front valance.

93-1/2MY Esprit Turbo SE

The 931/2MY (93.5) was a transition into the later S4 and was once again only available in the US. It included the following changes:

* Passenger side airbag
* S4-style interior with (slightly) more head, leg, and shoulder room. Window controls mounted on the center console.
* Flush, body-colored, vertically operating exterior door handles instead of the old black horizantal operating handles.
* Wider opening doors.
* A clutch line that routed across the front of the transmission to the passenger's side. The 93 runs straight back the driver's side.
